If you haven't tried it yet the program 'testdrive' is pretty easy to
use for doing test installs if you have access to an iso.

when fglrx is used.Switching to the free driver made the problem go

Does it consistently show up hollow for you using the example file? But
it looks fine on my system. Does moving/removing the ~/.openoffice.org*
directories help any? Also does reverting to the open source ati video
driver help any?

Yep, the hollw line appears every time. It looks just like the
screenshot in post#2.
Removing $HOME/{.ooo3,.openoffice.org,.openoffice.org2} makes no
difference.
Maybe it has to do with the fonts installed on my system, or the screen
resolution (1920x1200).
