This happened to me too. I'm pretty sure it's because you have no window manager running. I set things to run `compiz --replace` at login. The same thing should work if you want metacity: `metacity --replace`. Put the command in SystemsPreferencesStartup ApplicationsAdd -- Gnome windows have no

This bug has occured to me on various other machines, after upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04. It's very annoying, please fix it ASAP. I've found out that the described behaviour can be corrected by going to System - Preferences - Appearance and, in Visual Effects tab, switch from ”None” to ”Normal”.
