Martin, thanks for that. I have just shut down my Dell Dimension 9150
U10.04 AMD64 with the speakers full on, got my head blasted with
crackles as usual, and then booted from the alpha 3 U10.10 AMD64.
Checked that sound was good, then shut down.
Not a beep, crackle or hiss. Silent as the grave.
In the meantime I solved the sound problem on the HP Pavilion dv7 -
problems with levels of alsamixer being down (maybe Skype modified them)
and some output settings wrong (guess they have been changed by
accident).
Then I tried Ubuntu 10.10 beta from an USB stick and did not recognized

I was again dealing with the HP Pavilion dv7, I reported this issue with.
Guess what: Sound is now in general not working any more, but the crackling
noise on shutdown still occurs (latest updates applied, so running 10.04.1 now).

I too am having this problem (crackling noise from speaker as it
reboots/shutsdown) running Lucid on an HP Pavilion DV6.

I am also experiencing a crackling noise when I reboot on Lucid, but I'm
using an HP Pavilion DV6. I imagine the cause is similar or the same,
though. Or should I make a separate bug report?
Here's some more info about my system:

No such luck when I updated U10.04 my Dell Dimension 9150, but then a
key difference is that my crackling noises are on an external amplifier
which is NOT shut down when the PC turns itself off. Since the same HW
with WXP does not exhibit the noise, I am still hoping to find there is

Today I created an image with the latest CloneZilla live CD 1.2.5-17 and
on shutdown there was the cracking noise - Trying again with a normal
Ubuntu 10.04 installation (no particular newer kernel) + all updates
until yesterday the noise is already gone.

I tested yesterday with Kernel 2.6.34 RC7 and the noise is now nearly
gone - if I am pedantic - if not, it's just gone.

I wondered if Daniel Chen's suggestion was for Martin or me (Nick). Anyway, I
tried it, and installed

after a reboot, the shutdown still made the horrible noises. I assume that
