Unfortunately, nothing in the thread online works for getting a
screenshot anymore. However, through a bit of luck I noticed that x11vnc
can connect to a GDM session with:
x11vnc -display :0 -auth /var/run/gdm/auth-for-gdm-Vj6ZZp/database
Where the auth path will change a bit for each restart of
To me it sounds like you're seeing the default gdm login screen, but to
be sure please make a screenshot.

I understand that the user theme is different than the gdm theme. I
thought gdm configuration was controlled partially by /var/lib/gdm/*,
but that could be incorrect. I've included the gconf info from the gdm
user as I thought that might be relevant.
I'm having trouble getting a screenshot; using
Andrew, the gdm is the component which shows the login screen and the
user theme doesn't affect the gdm component.
Could you please provide a screenshot and attach it to this bug if I
have misinterpreted your description.
