Chris Jones, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com

Only change with the new lbm_cw_mac80211 module and kernel 2.6.28-13,
was that I can't even get a connection with ath5k now. And still no led
activity when the connection is in progress. "nm-tool" do list all
broadcasting SSID's, so the card and driver is alive.

@Christiansen,
Could you try installing the linux-backports-modules-jaunty package? It
contains an updated compat-wireless stack which may help. I'd be
curious if know if it resolves your low bandwidth/disconnect issues as
well as the led issue reported here. Thanks.

I have enabled the atheros madwifi driver, as I can't get Lenovo's WiFI
card to work reliable with the kubuntu default open source ath5k driver
(low bandwith and disconnections).
@Thomas Hood : The ath5k driver seems to rename the interface-devices to
"wmaster?" and "wlan?", so you should probably
On my ThinkPad X61 system, "sysctl -a" does not report any "dev.wifi0"
variables at all. I am using the ath5k driver module. For which driver
does the workaround work?

Still exactly the same issue in Jaunty - and the workaround still
applies :
A "sudo nano /etc/sysctl.conf" and inserting a new line with
"dev.wifi0.ledpin = 1" makes it work after a reboot too.

The 18 month support period for Feisty Fawn 7.04 has reached its end of life
some months ago.
As a result, we are closing the linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20 task.
It would be helpful if you could test the new Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 release
and confirm if this issue remains -
http://www.ubuntu.co
The solution
dev.wifi0.ledpin=1
dev.wifi0.softled=1
worked in Intrepid but no longer works in Jaunty (4 March 2009).
I guess it's because there is no longer a wifi0 device. Now ifconfig
reports a wlan0 and a wmaster0 device.
# find /proc /sys -name \*softled\*
# find /proc /sys -name \*ledpi
Actually on subsequent reboots, wireless fails outright. It sees the
network sometimes and then other times not. Cannot connect in either
case.
Commenting out dev.wifi0.softled=1 from sysctl.conf fixes the connection
problem. Using WICD 1.4.2.
Any ideas?

Also confirmed on Thinkpad T41, running AR5005GS. 8.04 Hardy upgrade from Gutsy
using the alternate CD.
Mine shows up as "dev.wifi0.softled=0", run "sudo sysctl -w
dev.wifi0.softled=1", the LED starts flashing.
Editing /etc/sysctl.conf and adding dev.wifi0.softled=1, fixes the LED not

I can confirm the steps Christiansen mentioned. I have a fresh install
of hardy on a Thinkpad T61.
dev.wifi0.softled was already 1 but not dev.wifi0.ledpin! After enabling
it, wifi led works...

In my system the line should be "dev.wifi0.softled = 1". "ledpin" does

After a little research I found that a "sysctl dev.wifi0.ledpin" showed
"0". Did a "sudo sysctl -w dev.wifi0.ledpin=1", and the led flashed
gladly on wireless network traffic.

"dev.wifi0.ledpin = 1" makes it work after a reboot too.

I too can confirm that the problem seems to affect Hardy Beta 1.
BUT according to "sudo sysctl -a | grep softled" the bit is already set
to "1", so the solution may seems not to be as strait forward as initial
suggested.
