I'm having this problem as well. I'm running Ubuntu Gutsy.
I tried to open Synaptic and it closed halfway through retrieving
updates. I get the segmentation fault (core dump) errors whenever I try
to do apt-get upgrade or aptitude update.

Jen can you please attach the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade to this bug
report. Than try sudo rm /var/cache/apt/*.bin and see if that helps.
What versions of apt and libapt are you seeing this on? does sudo apt-
get update help this issue at all?

This problem I had today with an upgrade of my Hardy beta. Here a short
description what happened: I run an update with the update manager. The
update of the packages went well. After this I exectuted the upgrade
when suddenly closed unexpectetly. when I tried to run the update in the
console with
Just happened again in Feisty. The solution is the same: remove
/var/cache/apt/*.bin. Backtrace for reference:
Core was generated by `apt-get update'.
Program terminated with signal 11, Segmentation fault.

I had the same problem as martin till 2 minutes ago i am running fiesty and
suddenly add/remove program synaptic managere and apt-get didn't work anymore
add/remove just opens start to load and just shutdown again
the same for the synaptic manager
apt-get install does this
~$ sudo apt-get
Please upgrade to apt version 0.6.46.4ubuntu6 and see if it still does
it. onc eyou remove the bin files from /var/cache/apt/ leave them
deleted and it should work fine. the .bin files were getting corrupted
but this issue has been fix in feisty.

sure john...youre right...i dont think these bug-report are asking for
help though.
it seems that deleting the .bin files has helped everybody.
i think people are just trying to express that an install cd with
dysfunctional apt is quite a showstopper - how is the user supposed to
upgrade apt?
I am running Feisty Fawn Herd 1 (AMD64), and I'm also having this issue.
The temp fix as listed above: sudo rm /var/cache/apt/*.bin worked for
me.
All apt-related commands would SEGFAULT in this scenario. I kept the
.bin files from /var/cache/apt incase I would need to reproduce this.
I am

jens is aptitude also crashing? (try it please) sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude dist-upgrade. to make sure you are fully up to date. the
fully updated apt doesnt crash anylonger and it never affected aptitude
just apt, synaptic, adept. you can also try sudo rm /var/cache/apt/*.bin
and than see
i couldnt do apt-get update since it crashed...
but manually solving it with removing /var/cache/apt worked...
thanks

i installed feisty herd 1...and from there it was impossible to upgrade
my system. it was a fresh install so i guess there was a pretty serious
bug on the livecd...
anyhow - -like you say it will hopefully not be present for herd 2 and
there is a manual fix for those who install herd 1...
thanks
Can you still reproduce this crash? I would be very interessted in a
backtrace.
Cheers,
Michael

with Herd 1.

Installed apt_0.6.46.3_i386.deb and debian-archive-
keyring_2006.01.18_all.deb from Debian Sid, which solved the issue.
