Ohh, right... you must be just waiting for the GUI to come up. You need
to look at the boot loader screen. When you see the little keyboard
icon at the bottom of the screen, touch any key.
Thanks - that's better.
Started check disk, drive runs up and down, arm clicks busily.. for
a long time gets into its stride, stops. Just Ubuntu 11.04 with
dots, no other messages until it ends with:-
(initramfs) Unable to find a medium containing a live file system.
Looks like a duff
It is likely you just have a bum disc and the iso image is fine. You
can check the image by following the instructions here:

Sorry, maybe I'm blind, but I don't see the check disc option. After
booting from either the live CD or USB stick, I am only given the
options to try or install ubuntu.
I can go to the system settings on the shut down menu and select either
disk utility or system testing, both of which I tried

There are 5 options when you boot the livecd:
1) Try Ubuntu Without Installing
2) Install Ubuntu
3) Check disc for defects
4) Test memory
5) Boot from first hard disk

Comment:
The 10.04 Disk Utility says the CD file structure is OK.
First attempt to boot from the CD failed, - no live files found.
Second attempt succeeded, No error found, but maybe I'm not running the correct
disk check option.
Where do I find it?

I meant run the disc check option when you boot the cd to see if it is
good.

I am reluctant to run the 11.04 install having got 10.04 working again.
It would be ok if the installer still offered the option to install
11.04 alongside, but now it only offers to replace 10.04. and it took me
two days to get it back.
I have tried checking the disk, the results are attached.
Having tried many combinations all ending in the same file system
creation error and managed to destroy the GRUB in the process. I used
Vista recovery to get back Windows, then used 10.04 live CD give me Disk
Utility. With that I removed all the Linux partitions, except the last
swap file that
Chancing my luck again, I tried to install 11.04 next to 10.04 2 LTS.
However, now the installer only offers to replace 10.04 or do one's own
thing, which I am not going to risk again.

Yes, that syslog appears to have been taken when using a corrupt
installation medium. Can you try again with a known good medium ( you
might want to run the disc check before installing ), and attach those
logs? Also, why do you have so many partitions? To remote the swap
partition, you will
Thanks for responding.
On the second attempt, The available HD space is further reduced, some
of 11.04 had been installed by the first attempt, but nothing in GRUB.
However, the second time, the installation continues a little further
than the first time. The world map is displayed and the
I subsequently tried loading the 11.04 iso file to a new USB stick, It
failed also, but in a slightly different way, having successfully
partitioned, it failed on completing the file copying phase. I tried
burning a CD with the iso file. It failed also after partitioning giving

Last resort, I downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 2 LTS and tried to install it. It
crashes with the the same error message
: The ext4 file system creation #21 of SCS11(0,0,0)(sda) failed.
I don't have much disk space left for more attempts, as each install alongside
scoffs 4 to 10 GB of disk.

Can you manage to reproduce this and open this bug in the web browser
