I was on the right track by installing nscd, but there's more to it than
that. The package to install is libnss-ldapd, which will automatically
include nscd and one other
New information: Thunderbird fails to work w/ LDAP users
1) Create a local user w/ a given UID, GID, and HOME_DIR, w/ contents from
/etc/skel/: works
2) Delete local user
3) Create an LDAP user w/ same UID, GID, and HOME_DIR, w/ contents from
/etc/skel/: DOES NOT WORK
NOTE: HOME_DIR is a local

The solution is to install the nscd package. Then Thunderbird will
operate normally.

Addendum: Since I don't understand what was causing the bug, I don't
think I would tall this a solution so much as a workaround. I still
do not understand why thunderbird failed to run for LDAP users. I would
still consider this a serious bug, as many organizations surely rely
upon LDAP for

trying to look up hostnames.

Additional notes:
1) Tried moving ~/.thunderbird/ and ~/.mozilla-thunderbird/ to force
Thunderbird to re-generate these directories and start over with a clean slate.
No good.
2) Created a new account on this machine, logged out and logged back into the
new account. Thunderbird runs fine.

Additional notes: Have also tried -safe-mode and -ProfileManager
command line options, also to no avail.
