I have just now installed the Precise beta2, and I can report that the
problem is solved. The harddisk now works.
The Iomega external HDD is a strange construction. It is delivered with a
"virtual CD", containing a (useless) encryption program. This cd can be
removed using an Iome

It seems like I have the same or similar problem.
Trying to attach an (usb3-capable) Iomega Prestige 1.5TB 2.5" to a
builtin USB3.0 port of a Clevo P150HM laptop, dmesg gives the following
lines:

Slightly changed behaviour: After the latest kernel update (2.6.38-11)
the system is not freezing when the disk is connected, but it is still
not recognized. Same problem exists in Oneiric beta 2.

When the harddisk is attached after the system is running, the system
freezes completely after ab. 10 seconds - power off is required. When
the harddisk is attached before start, it is simply not recognized.
