Thumbnails only works when you have a couple of large windows in which
you can make out the contents of the thumbnail.
right, that's what bug #879888 should address this cycle by displaying
the title of those on mouseover, it should give you enough informations
to find the instance you need

Thanks for the bug report. what you are proposing have been discussed in
the past and have been declined a couple of times, a list of windows on
right click or something like windows7 both have been rejected by the
design team so I'll mark this bug as opinion

in Ubuntu 11.10 its not like that. if you have multiple windows
associated to one and you minimize all the windows, clicking one time on
the launcher will raise the last minimized app, click again would show
all the windows in spread and you can click the window you want.
