The black usplash screen problem with any {k}{x}ubuntu for AMD64 is bug
#147623. This bug has enough information, unless you know something that
has not been said in this bug report. However, you can contribute by
testing new releases when this bug will be fixed. From now on, the bug

I opened a question, and the answer I got was that this behaviour may be
difficult to change. However, it still counts as a bug because of the
unintuitive behaviour, so I'm confirming it as such. I'm not sure
whether this is a compiz bug or not, but I'm leaving it be for now.

I've upgraded to Hardy and have not had this problem since. For what
it's worth, I'm still really disappointed that it got totally dropped
and neglected while I had to deal with it day after day. I don't know
what I should have done to get this bug more press, but it was a very

To resolve the issue follow this steps:
1. Open the "Configuration Editor"
2. Expand "Desktop"
3. Expand "gnome"
4. Highlight "volume_manager"
5. Go to the right panel and find out the entry: autoplay_vcd_command
6. and change %m for "vcd:///dev/cdrom"
That's all
Enjoy it!
