My Dell E1405 running latest Ubuntu Hardy kernel 2.6.24-21-generic #1
SMP suffered from this unresponsiveness problem until today when i found
this thread and added pci=nomsi to kernel boot parameters. After that

When pressing fn+brighten, fn+darken on laptop, the brightness first gets
adjusted, then the osd pops up and restores previous setting and after a delay
changes it again. If pressing rapidly, brightness alternates between two
strengths until osd-control has caught up.
Thanks for the update. I'm closing this report since this is definitely
not a bug in Ubuntu and you've finally fixed it.

better. However, the error you describe suggests that you have either
ran out of memory, or your user has reached their maximum number of
allowed processes. Can you recreate this problem after you have done the

I think it is a bug that you cannot easely rebuild the ffmpeg package
from Ubuntu to match your country's laws. I mean just because of patents
in the US it does not mean that the rest of the world should get
punished. Make it an easy option in the package, at this moment it
AFAIK, .la file claimed to be unnecessary for proper libtool
functionality. And more importantly - software shouldn't know about what
lib in particular it will be linked - it's libtool job to decide.
