This freeze also happened to me on the Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04, on a asus
eee 901 with ssd and ext2 file system.
If the system was not properly shutdown, I think it is recommended to run fsck.
To solve the problem I booted from the Ubuntu USB disk and used the console to
run fsck:

Yesterday I was able to solve the problem by:
1. Changing BIOS default setting of PNP=NO (because Windows takes care
of PNP) to PNP=YES;
2. Download the iso file of Ubuntu Alternate CD for Lucid Beta 2;
3. Burn to a CD and install Lucid Beta 2.

As Bug #195848 got fixed it's about time to enable this functionality
also in the GUI of NM. We would need a FFe for that:
I repackaged lucid latest package 0.8-0ubuntu2 with the 3 patches from
Steffen Röcker. Works great, like his PPA packages for older Ubuntu
releases.
