I tried noacpi, and it makes no difference. I also tried adding the outb
commands to Grub in order to switch from the ATI discrete card to the Intel
integrated one. This resulted in the screen turning on with some garbage
(12.04) or what appears to be a dark maroon

I agree it's likely to be an lvm/udev race; some observations:
1) It doesn't seem to happen with files
2) With lvm, It doesn't always happen if the guest is configured with a
single core; most of the time but not always
3) With lvm it seems to happen (almost?) always whe
I experienced this issue on a fresh 12.04 install on a Lenovo Ideacentre
K330 with the Intel i3-2120 3.30GHz CPU.
The issue resolved after running the commands listed in Step 1 at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure#Step.

This exact erro
compounding the problem are OBO [ our benevolent overlord] 'freeing" the
kde & xfce part of the family from ubuntu
