I hit this today while upgrading from 13.10 to 14.04 as well. I have 3 hard
drives, 2 with just data . I first did a standard upgrade with Update manager,
then did a compleate reinstall after downloading the 32bit download to a USB

I managed to solve this error and do the upgrade from 13.10 to 14.04.
If you have the Xorg-edgers PPA enabled you have to purge it first, in
order to revert to the original config. However, I thought I just had to
remove the PPA from my software sources and be done with it. That didn't

the xfwm compositor because otherwise JDownloader creates annoying
artifacts on the top left corner. Also, the user shouldn't have to turn
on an optional feature to make xfwm work properly with CSD.

The patch does not require any new decorations. It can reuse the existing
ones by flipping the bottom border pixmaps and drawing them at the top. This
happens if the new decorations are missing. Adding new decorations is

becomes completely unusable for around 15 minutes or so because of
updatedb. This is not behaviour I used to get when I was using Windows,
and I have never heard a Mac user complain about anything like this.

On lightdm screen click on battery indicator in top right corner. Select
the first menu item. gnome-power-statistic window should be opened.

That happened to me when I upgraded from 13.10 to 14.04 stable. But no
solution worked for me.. It's very serious as I couldn't work now.
I tried to use nvidia 331 drivers, prime select nvidia and Intel, purge
all nvidia drivers, startx... But always all black except terminal. I

It no longer works so the freeze is back again.
I didn't change anything, it just worked for some time and now it reverted back
to old behaviour.

Good to know that it's working for you!
I believe the black rectangle is caused by lacking of compositing
support in the window manager, i.e. openbox in lxde. Can you try to
install and configure a compositing window manager for openbox to see if
the black rectangle gets disappeared.
