I hit this today while upgrading from 13.10 to 14.04 as well. I have 3 hard 
drives, 2 with just data . I first did a standard upgrade with Update manager, 
then did a compleate reinstall after downloading the 32bit download to a  USB 
drive. Same error "symbol 'grub_term_highlight_color' not found". 
Then ran Boot Repair from a USB drive it works but I had to reinstall all my 
Brothers printer and scanner deb files. 
I recommend to download onto the USB drive Boot Repair  first and use a USB 
installer to install the .iso image to the USB Drive.

After you have Boot Repair on a seperate USB Drive just do a standard upgrade 
and restart with the Boot Repair USB Drive and repair GRUB
