libasound2-plugins package.
As for making it the default, this is not possible, as kubuntu/xubuntu
use the same libraries, for alsa, but don't use pulseaudio. Making
pulseaudio the default would only force them to use pulseaudio, which

Ok Conn, I managed to reproduce your findings, i.e using intrepid's
alsa-lib/alsa-plugins with skype with pulse defined in .asoundrc.
However, it is very choppy for audio output, and microphone input gets
completely scrambled on one machine I have here, and another sounds no
different to the audio

pingus. Planetpenguin-racer has the same problem. It is something to do
with MIDI music playback and SDL.

1. GNOME doesn't wait for the GNOME logout sound to be played before killing
everything. Esound obviously manages to hold things up enough to play the
sound, whihc pulseaudio doesn't.

This package was removed from Debian sid in the Dapper lifecycle. It is
still not there, so is also not in edgy.
My guess is that those who originally put the package in Debian, decided
to remove it as it is easier to keep up to date with externals from the
PD CVS.

This is unfortunately something that is not really solvable with the
current GNOME/esd/ALSA architecture for sound.
I suggest you try turning off esd, and see what happens. The two sounds play,
because you are using aplay to play a sound file, which is using ALSA. However,
Software DECtalk
It is already in edgy.
