I have one update.
I have exact the same situation with my Lenovo laptop.

Above is explained that this issue is fixed in kernel 3.14.0. So, waiting or
getting an upstream kerel is an solution.
I triggered this situation when trying to install a proprietary NVIDIA driver.
This driver cannot be loaded into the kernel. First must its key being
registered in the bios. During install of the driver I'm asked to switch off
UEFI secure boot and then reboot. On reboot a blue screen appears
is this a problem with my laptop (i suspect maybe so) , if so is there a
workaround?

As no objections have been raised in the past 5 days, I have marked all
the Synaptic-doesn't-run under-Wayland related bugs as duplicates of
this.

Public bug reported:
When logged in using the "Ubuntu X.org" desktop, scrolling is always
unnatural regardless of the setting in System Settings or dconf.
It works as expected with "Ubuntu" or "Unity"
** Affects: desktop-base (Ubuntu)
Importance: Undecided
Status: New

expect that.
That's because with xhost set, apps fall back to using XWayland. At some
point in the future XWayland will disappear and this hack will no longer
work.

Re comment #21, according to
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1274451
"GEdit now (on Gnome 3.24) has a mode where it can transparently edit
files with root permissions without running as root."
However I've not been able to find any trace of that in the GEdit
included with Ubuntu
Public bug reported:
I have tried both Eclipse 3.8.1-10 (Neon) from the Ubuntu distribution
and the latest Eclipse Oxygen.
Both end up hanging (becoming none responsive) while the splash screen
is still showing.
Broken things
-
1. The splash screen appears in the top left corner
** Also affects: eclipse
Importance: Undecided
Status: New
** No longer affects: synaptic (Ubuntu)

Title:
Eclipse not working in
I have removed the duplicate marking on this bug. The bug this was
marked as a duplicate of, bug #1712089, is a general report about the
inability to run graphical applications as root under Wayland. As noted
in comment #3, this is a Wayland design decision and Synaptic needs to
be changed.
