I just did a fresh install of xubuntu 8.10 on a clean disk Compaq

I just had this very same bug, and solved it using the same workaround.

A final comment on how the bug appeared : Migrating from 8.04 to 8.10,
while migrating mailboxes to SQLite (after a few seconds of migration)
on a large mailbox.

I am the original reporter of this bug. Fortunately, it seems to have
gone away by itself sometime in late Hardy/early Intrepid. Sorry I don't
know the details. I had switched back to Emacs-X11. One day, I got so
sick of the ugly fonts that I reinstalled Emacs-Snapshot, and it just
worked.

Not really. While If I load the pilot-link and jpilot packages and
modprobe visor and use ttyUSB1 then I can sync to jpilot - but I don't
want to use the jpilot PIM. Gnome-pilot sees the PDA and the sync acts
like it is going to work (the Clie makes the sync sound) but gnome-pilot
then immediately
