Normally when people talk about lines on the screen, they are seeing
visual artifacts due to poor video rendering.
You can change the user preferences to not use desktop effects (comipz).
Go to System-Preferences-Appearance.

I believe gnome-power-manager hasn't been able to provide a time
estimate since the rewrite for upower if your battery does not supply a
charge/discharge rate in /sys/class/power_supply/BAT*/current_now. My
battery always shows a 0 there, so I suffer from this problem.

I have a very similar problem with my texlive 2009 installation on

common, texlive-common, texlive-fonts-extra. They do not install

I could easily be mis-remembering but after doing an upgrade from 10.04
- 10.10 everything worked fine. This system is an I5 64-bit
installation and it has Ugh, windows 7 as a bootable partition. I
never boot into Windows 7 but a relative needed something done from
Windows 7 so I did allowed it

Well, I have removed the workaround ever since the updates (see comment
#10). Nevertheless, I was using the workaround in 3 different computers
for about a week and the problem never occured again.
