package itself doesn't have a dependency on rubygems.

It looks like the problem is that the runit package is using the old
upstart directory, /etc/event.d/ for runsvdir. I copied the file to
/etc/init and runit was able to start.

I never print locally, since this system is a server (specifically for
this printer and some data). I've invested enough time in this issue
already, sorry.
As for the kernel packages, I don't have linux-386 installed. I made

process didn't work properly. I never removed the linux-386 package (or
any other kernel related packages).

Yup, that was the real bug. I installed the Dapper kernel package,
rebooted and lpinfo showed usb://Samsung/ML-1740 as before
That didn't help.
In the CUPS printers page it still shows:
Device URI: hp:/no_device_found
and
samsung_ml1740 open device failed; will retry in 30 seconds...
And lpinfo -v:

Printing a test page didn't work either. I did go ahead and install
the full ubuntu desktop
I have restarted CUPS after every change I've made. I've also rebooted.
Why would the Linux kernel see the device but CUPS wouldn't? What is
missing?
