I've hit this bug with Edgy release (2.6.17-10-generic kernel) on a
Toshiba Satellite Pro 460CDT laptop and an Apacer Handy Steno USB
pendrive. Reading from the drive hangs after a while. Nothing in dmesg.
The drive works on my desktop running Dapper and also worked on the
laptop running

Here is some update.
Eth0 (my network card) is still having problems. When is is configured
with a static ip, the card shows up in the KDE system information and I
can ping my router and my ISP dns server.
When I configure eth0 with a dynamic ip using the control panel, eth0

driver and xorg doesn't play nicely.
can boot up, with the sis driver enable in xorg.conf, but when gdm is
loaded, it flickers and dies... no keyboard input

The Save button (default response) turns grey (as if it was pressed)

I close this bug again since this boot problem and the one in 2.6.17 are
two different issues. In 2.6.15 (Dapper) the kernel didn't boot with
BootX - period. That was fixed in 2.6.15-23-powerpc.
The 2.6.17 (Edgy) kernel boots fine when no initial ramdisk (initrd.img)

Kernel 2.6.17-2-powerpc (from Edgy) does not boot on my OldWorld
Powermac (G3, beige) using BootX. The boot process stops at the point
where BootX normally switch to the kernel, the problem lies in the very
beginning of the kernel
Another observation: The kernel boots when started without initrd - at
least until it panics because it cannot find the root filesystem driver
(ext3). I've tried raising ramdisk_size to 16384 and 32768 without any
luck.

I think this is a duplicate of bug #23445. Try this workaround:
* boot using Linux single so gdm is not started
* do not use tab on the console
* disable sound in gdm by setting
SoundProgram=/bin/true
SoundOnLogin=false
In /etc/gdm/gdm.conf

My fault - I should have written ... install breezy, wait for the next
kernel upgrade to dapper and then dist-upgrade.
