Version 3 of the Linux kernel allows me to change screen brightness. Somewhat unrelated point: Unity 3D wouldn't start properly in Ubuntu 11.0 or 11.04. I had to reset compiz after session start to force the menu and window decorations to appear. Gnome 3 worked flawlessly. Have switched to XFCE.

Kamal's patch and Jose's instructions are working for me on Gateway NV59 11h with BIOS 1.09 and GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=acpi_backlight=vendor (I did not update my BIOS as I can't figure out where the Gateway BIOS updates are.) I vote for including the patch in mainline. Thanks Kamal and Jose! --
