I have refurbished 9 machines over the past few years as it is cheaper
than buying new I find, for what I do.
I find intel mobo's are coolest and thus quietest running for one thing.
I have used all three i3, i5 and i7 versions with no problems with any
of them.

As a data point, I am using an ASUS M5A99X EVO R2.0 and AMD 6350 on
Ubuntu Studio 14.04. I do little live recording with the desktop -
laptop gets used for that, but the ASUS works well for post-production
mixing and editing of both audio and video.

In addition to Mike's hints, take a look at the hompage of your mobo
and care about upgardes of the BIOS or what ever it's called nowadays.
Do they care about Linux?
The upgrades for my dino mobo's BIOS mention Linux, but Linux real-time
audio still is another thingy ;).
