That depends. Most routers have the ability to offer separate SSIDs for each
band so to switch you would simply select the other network name on your laptop
network setup, however I notice that lately the thing seems to be offer both
bands under a single SSID and let the router choose which
hey luke, i don't even know how to force the card to use the 2.4ghz band. my
other laptops have no problem at all it seems. they only have 802.11b/g/n cards
and they seem fine. i can get closer to the router with my lenovo and it does
get better but it seems to drop the signal anyway

Do you have problem with wifi on both bands, or just one of the two? While AC
is faster it is frequently more likely to drop out at range.
