I've noticed low performance since the .31 kernel series (well, once I
got it to work without flickering). The .30 kernels all are very fast
for my i945.
Could this be related to #382017?

Yes, that patch (applied to the source package from the x-updates ppa)
still gives me working xv. Note via_swov.c:Upd_Video still uses
NativeMode-Width, but I don't know if it's actually possible to trigger
that code, or what would happen if it got a 0 width (dwWidth would be
set to 0, but I don't

I have the same problem with 32bit Jaunty and a Matrox g400 agp card
connected vga to a 22 Westinghouse LCM-22w3 monitor(1680x1050 max). I
only get low resolution.
If I switch to a 19 Samsung 913v monitor (1280x1024 max) I get full
resolution. It appears that xorg doesn't have the timings for
I was having the same problem and fixed it by turning on uxa.
Details on how to do that are here

ubuntu crash restart itself when playing video in totem movie player and at
the same time clicking on anything/ anywhere outside of the player
This is still happening in karmic with the driver from the KMS ppa, no matter
that even XAA is specified (although I suspect it still uses EXA).
The only option to avoid is to to have EXA and EXANoComposite turned on, but
then this makes everything horribly slow.

ok removed the options from Xorg.conf. It does not matter for the
AccelMethod as I suspect the PPA ati driver is using EXA anyway. Now the
corruption is less likely, but it is different one, mostly text font
tearing.

After a while spent on 8.10 i tried 9.04 again, just to check if that
problem has been solved. It hasn't but I've spent some time on Google
and found out that adding sisfb to /etc/modules is the answer.

Thank you. The xrandr output is identical to the one without the
flicker. That is interesting, but I was hoping that the mode would be
slightly different in the flickering case. I think we have all the
information we need to take this further, so I'm setting the status to
Triaged.
