I found the problem! Apparently my motherboard has some design flaw. I have a
Gigabyte GA-MA780G-UD3H.
I read that it helps to Onboard VGA Output Support option in the Advanced
section of the bios and set it to D-Sub/HDMI, but I have not tried it yet
myself.
So no software problem. Bug closed.

finally I have found the origin of the problem, looks like the i915
module can not be loaded , because of a mismatch in the kernel module
loading orders, since it was impossible to get /dev/dri/card0
To solve the problem, I compiled a custom kernel setting agpgart and i915 drm
in the kernel and
I confirm that the proposed fix works. I also vote for promoting it to
karmic updates :)

Thanks for noticing that the video expansion setting would make this
work. I just upgraded my wife's Dell D505, and it was set to show a
smaller-and-crisper boot-up screen (video expansion = off). If she had
seen the screen in that funky interlaced / overlapped / folded

While the touchpad works with the kernel paramter tweak, there is no way
adjust any of the settings. Particularly sensitivity really needs to be
turned up a bit.

This is more a case of unwieldy behavior than an actual bug. Steps to
recreate: (1) create a user (2) rename their home directory (3) log in
to X as that user.
