I have the same result on my HP6735b with a AMD RS780M/RS780MN (Radeon HD 3200)
using ati or radeonhd as driver.
On boot up I see non sense on the screen. The I can see the log on screen and
the computer freeze. Sometimes just on begin of showing the screen, sometimes

tried to log in and observed the freeze, then I started up again and
without logging in the normal way got to a text terminal and copied the
logs to my /home. Then I booted with the installation disk, mounted the

I have done some further digging and it appears to be related to the
BIOS/EDID miss reporting informationMy screen is a 15.6 HD LCD
1366x768. the driver doesn't detect LCD correctlyso by default ends

Andrew, you shouldn't need to reinstall Xubuntu many times to find the
package upgrade that causes this. If you do a `sudo apt-get dist-
upgrade` you can save the list of packages that is getting upgraded and
choose no in order to not upgrade right away. You can then run `apt-
get install
Fix from #3 worked for me. Copy/pasted #31 to implement. I now have a
background again on Karmic x64 with a RV280 (Radeon 9200 SE).

apparently the radeon drm driver doesn't support audio-on-hdmi on
2.6.32, so this can't be dropped before the support for it has been
pulled from .33, or when MM has the newer kernel.
