I also had this problem on lucid. Applying the patches automatically
failed, but I was able to manually apply the patches and I'm up and
running with two monitors. I repackaged patch-3 as it worked on my

three upgrades. It sure

Same behavior here. When pluging in the VGA cable system freezes and a hard
reset is needed to recover.
The same thing happened in 9.10 although if I remember correctly when I first
installed 9.10 (before any updates) the VGA out worked. I upgraded to 10.04
from 9.10 using update-manager.
I'm actually seeing the same thing and I'm using the custom binary
NVidia drivers. The custom pointer was working fine in 9.10 but now I
get the described behavior in 10.04 after the upgrade.

Ok, this was much ado about nothing after all...
This mess was caused by a faulty libcairo2 package in a repo I added to my
software sources list (the gimp-dev one).
I switched back to ubuntu's default package and everything's fine now.

I cannot confirm that Compiz needs long to load. Since I needed to start
certain applications after Compiz, I wrote a script for that, and the
applications called in it start about 0.5-1 second after the panels. I
have also moved the nvidia-settings line in it now:
