This is getting sad. I am now resorting to booting up on my microsoft hard drive because the Ubuntu crash is occurring consistently after about five minutes of use regardless. Last night I had to give up trying to reply because the screen would just go blank and flash the bars as I was typing.

this is what got my system working again: * ssh in from remote * delete existing /etc/X11/xorg.conf (this step may not have been needed) * download from nvidia.com the NVIDIA-Linux-*.run for your hardware and copy it to your PC (I did it with a second PC and transfered via scp)
