FWIW, I just had the same problem in Debian Squeeze with fglrx.
Turns out that the “sleep 1” was a good idea – in Debian, I just
installed file-rc to revert to “legacy” (as opposed to parallel) boot
ordering, which fixed the problem there.

Here's an xinput test recording. What strikes me as odd is that there
are motion events with only an a[0] coordinate, and no a[1] coordinate.
This seems related.
As far as I can interpret the wacom-pen2.record, it also seems odd that

On the same computer (running Xubuntu 10.10 ), open this page in both Google
Chromium and Firefox 4.0.
Then hit 'end', then hit 'home'. In Chromium, the movement is very fast,
firefox needs ~0.5 second to go to the end.
So it is the same computer, it is the same (nvidia proprietary) driver, it
just a small note, firefox 4.0 seems to be much better than previous
firefox versions, just that it is still much slower than chromium.

setting means the problem seems to be related to something else,

This probably isn't an Intel specific bug, because I'm on NVIDIA
graphics (proprietary drivers) and I'm having the same problem.
BTW, I've never been able to get vsyncing right with Compiz, but
Metacity has always worked perfectly for me (Maverick and before). With
Natty I can't get vsync to work

When I connect a VGA montor to the output on my Dell Inspirion (Intel
GM965) laptop, all the correct notices go off in KDE to allow me to
setup the 2nd monitor to be above/below etc. the LCD, but one of the
displays is always corrupted afterwards.

@Geert, well, vsync/tearing issues are such a generic symptom that two
drivers could have essentially the same problem with no common code
involved at all. In any case, these types of issues are best handled as
per-driver since even if there was shared code it'd probably require a
driver

Hi mic, this sounds like a fix we just put in for 915/945 chips
available in Ubuntu's linux 2.6.38-7.36 kernel, so I think once you
update to that kernel you should find this resolved.

Fairly sure this is a dupe of the vesafb issue which was fixed in the
kernel/grub/plymouth/etc. plumbing last week. So, should be resolved
