Update.. so now everything works fine with the synaptics driver, no boot to 3.2.1 or 3.2.6 required. I suspect this was an xorg problem all along. If I remove xserver-xorg-input-synaptics then the trackpad stops working (and oddly enough, the keyboard becomes really hard to use if X is running..

Precise does provide 32 bit glu dev libraries on amd64, you're compiling a 32 bit app and you need 32 bit dependencies that can't be installed at the same time as the amd64 ones in this case. If it's not showing up in the repositories that's no fault of mesa's, your dpkg configuration must be
