I have the same exact issue.
I can run startx from the cli and then launch Unity from a terminal --
as soon as Unity tries to launch, it kicks me back out with the same

I've downloaded and installed from repositorty the new kernel 3.2.0.30. After
that, I tried again to install Nvidia drivers from 'Additional drivers': same
failure, but reading XOrg log in /var/log and check xorg.conf file I found the
real problem: the Nvidia proprietary driver

does load OK, at least for bumblebee. I was keen to try it out to see if
it would crash with the Attempted to yield the CPU while in atomic or
interrupt context that plagued it in Precise while playing opengl

1. Downloaded 12.04.1 64 bit desktop DVD .iso
2. Written to USB stick via Startup Disk Creator in Lucid (64 bit

After adding the ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates and updating the nvidia
driver to version 304.37, there is some broken links related to update-
alternatives.
The driver seems to work, but has a very low FPS compared with the
nouveau driver.

xdiagnose 2.5.2 installed in 12.04; hook still triggered, problem not
resolved. reinstalled 12.04 as a possible solution, no joy. is there a
way to disable Apport? If so, is it ok to disable Apport as a solution?
In short, this fix doesn't seem to fix anything related to this issue
on my
disabled all checkboxes in xdiagnose as recommended above (note: only
box checked by default was auto-reporting). rebooted. no joy. opened
xdiagnose GUI and auto-reporting was re-enabled; this option must be a
persistent option in xdiagnose as I could not apply or save and
survive a reboot.
