Xorg 1.13 ABI issues, which basically stopped the NVIDIA blob working on
quantal with the 1.13rc X server.

The NVIDIA setting did not correct the problem, though it went further
(14 hours) without a freeze.
As far as the suggestion that this is not an NVIDIA problem, I read

here is a Xorg.log from latest daily liveCD of quantal amd64 (august,
27th).
Nothing was installed except ssh to let me stop lightdm and get the log
from /var/log (otherwise, as Xorg restart every few seconds... It's not
easy to do anything directly).

So the issue is that the x driver in 12.10 was updated, but the nvidia
driver does not support it yet. Until it's resolved, I suggest trying
the opensource version, nouveau. First make sure the driver is

I tried the solution in the post linked by htrex, and it works perfectly
for me! (64 bit Ubuntu) :D
It really is only a matter of adding some text at the end of the 4th
line in the file /etc/X11/Xsession.d/10fglrx
The text is:
32 bit systems --> :/usr/lib32/dri/
64 bit systems --> :/usr/lib/x8
