The fragments you can see after the greeter exits and the session starts is the
root-pixmap, which is shown so that there's no flickering until (in Xubuntu's
case) xfdesktop/xfwm4 starts.
However, in the case of nouveau, it doesn't seem to make matters any better.

with a friends' 5,2 machine on Live USB- the latest kernel in raring
works as does the trusty live cd with external vga.

On the one hand initial problem is gone - X starts ok now.
On the other hand final picture is buggy - video-buffer seems to be corrupted
and system is not really usable. I attach two screenshots of fresh Xubuntu

Error happened after installing kernel 3.12.7 and chanfing from fglrx-
update ti fglrx.
In console I uninstalled fglrx* and installed fglrx-update, but without
success. Ubuntu offers safe mode and crashes.
It is working with default open-source driver now.

Breaking the very standard behavior of right control in all applications
(e.g. xterminals!!) is really not acceptable, compared to the few issues
that the behavior has without it.

[regression] 3.5.0-26-generic and 3.2.0-39-generic GPU hangs on
Unfortunately I no longer have this hardware in a workable state, and
have upgraded to a new laptop, so I am unable to provide any further
debugging information. I suspect we may have to close off this bug
unless someone else is having the same issue.

between 12.04 and 13.04 not only on this Dell XPS 13, but also on a
Lenovo X410s, two entirely different laptops. I got a new workstation at
the time, and decided on testing

of the problem is xorg and Ubuntu 14.04 will use Mir, probably it is not
