Hopefully this information can help a little. I tested this on my
laptops HDMI port using an HDMI -> DVI converting cable.
If I plug the HDMI cable in before I turn the computer on, the laptop
recognizes both screens and I can manipulate them (not with the hotkey
still). I can go into System ->

I understand that you need the reports from the original reporter, but
I'm getting similar, if not the same problem.
On a fresh install of 9.10, the external display button on my hp dm3z
worked fine. With a vga monitor attached, I could hit fn+f4 and it
would go between laptop only, laptop+extern
