On a HP 8440p, I use the external monitor through the Display Port (and adapter

it in just after I power on the laptop (basically, I have to switch it

Ok, the solution is the following, as crazy at it may sound. I have to
plug in and turn on the external display while the laptop is showing the
bios options. If I plug it later, or before switching it on, it won't be
detected!

External display using the digital Display Port (and adapter to DVI) is not
working. VGA output is instead working fine. Display Port output worked once,
apparently for no reason (just unplugging and plugging again for a few times),

Any hope of a bug fix on older kernels? This kernel seems to work just
great on my machine.

@madbiologist
Yes, kernel 2.6.35.3 solves the problem on my HP 8440p, the screen works
fine, and everything else as well, it seems. Is this a stable release of
the kernel? Is it advisable to use it on a production machine?
Thanks

I have the same problem on a 8440p. I could install and I am using
ubuntu adding on grub the options 'xforcevesa' and 'i915.modeset=0'
(both). But I can only use the safe graphics mode.

On my machine I don't really want to test an alpha release of a kernel,
but I gave a try to #127. It doesn't boot on my laptop (core i5 540),
but I think that's not connected with graphics but something else.
Anyway, the good thing is that I can see the normal splash screen, so
the screen doesn't g
I tested the 32bit kernel of #107 on an i5 Arrendale, and it doesn't fix
the problem, it's exactly as before.

I have the very same problem on Thinkpad T42, changing xorg.conf

well, I kind of solved the problem installing from scratch. But after
a bit of use, it seems still very slow, compared to intrepid. Maybe
you should reopen the bug, otherwise I will do it myself, but not
before a week.

To understand whether the problem was in the upgrade process or in the
packages themselves, I installed from scratch on the same machine 9.04
(home partition untouched), and everything works smoothly out of the
box. So I solved my problem, but I guess there is some issue with the
upgrade system.

I was maybe a bit too optimist about the use of XAA. The performance
increase is evident, but it's still a fraction of what it used to be, I
realize after some use. The problem is still particularly evident when,
say, listening to mp3 and browsing with firefox. While before each

Adding Option "AccelMethod" "XAA" in my xorg.conf, almost gave me back the same
performances as in 8.10. Maybe you still have some suggestion for me to boost
it some more and, anyway, I strongly suggest to include this option as default
for this driver.
