Since upgrading from nvidia-current (304.51.really.304.43-0ubuntu1) to
nvidia-current-updates (304.51-0ubuntu1), I haven't experienced this
again (at least, in the last day), so perhaps it's a bug in the older
nvidia driver.

Sorry for the long delay in responding -- I was meaning to test this but
didn't get around to it. I just tested it out and the backlight was
reactivated coming out of standby mode. (Can't say I haven't found other
issues with nouveau, but anyway.)

I've possibly been hit by the same bug... not been able to track it down much
yet. It may be different because the symtoms are different:
Everything starts fine, then inactive applications stop responding to mouse
clicks. Active applications vary, sometimes fine, sometimes they don't work
