need, so I will stick with it. I am retired and not much of a computer

@Dave Lents: Well, that might make it worth pursuing were I running a
laptop. I do understand that the default driver probably runs up the
main cpu(s) at high revs and uses the ATI/AMD module strictly as a
presentation device, if that. My older Radeon 3000 GPU (AMD RS780 on-
board chip set)
fglrx will not load at all on my AMD/ATI RS780 chip set (on my mobo).
Doesn't seem to make much difference, as my system runs just fine in DVI
mode, and the one game I have that requires accelerated sound and video
operates correctly. The default(?) driver does the job for me.

The new version of fglrx fixes this problem. I have upgraded to
oneiric, and so this may certainly be closed.

With the latest set of fixes installed in the last hour using the dpkg
load, this problem was eradicated. Even though I am the originator, I

Investigating on my own further into this problem, I checked the nvidia
site. They have this driver in the version recommended by you as
correct and tested. It worked on 10.04, in fact, it worked on all
versions I used from 7.04 onwards.
It wasn't broken.

2010.09.14 - Received a massive update from the servers for 10.10 beta,
so I tried to start gdm, with a different result.
So I tried to start Xorg, and it failed on the Nvidia-96 driver. Here
is the Xorg log.
I got sick of messing with the console stuff on the test bed, so I
attached the disk drive to my production machine. There is a massive
amount of information in the various logs, and they are in suspended
animation at the moment. If anyone is interested, I could compress any
of them and set up a

I have no idea why I got this. I have removed myself from the
subscription list.
I don't think I ever had this kind of problem with synaptic. An
assertion failure implies that I have a copy of the source, which I do
not. Once upon a time I was an O/S programmer, but that was in the
1960-1980
