will have to test your steps with the default intel package (just open
synaptic and choose the appropriate version for
xserver-xorg-driver-intel).

Luigi, you are right. I have tested my patched package without using fglrx and
I get a segmenation fault like in your case :(

a stable situation, removing the external PPAs.
If you open synaptic, you go (lower left) to Origins and you see all

You press Ctrl+Alt+F1, and you go to console mode (you can always go
back to graphics mode with Ctrl+Alt+F7).
There you login, and you run:

If you want to use the terminal afterwards, the correct command is this:
DISPLAY=:0 compiz --replace
But the question is: did it work?
Do you get Unity and all the window borders?

Sorry, but I am kind of confused.
Let me see if I get it right:
With the official drivers ( I guess the ones shipped by default with Ubuntu),
you get:
a) Unity does not load, but you have the windows and you can open a new
terminal with Ctrl+Alt+T
b) If you write in the terminal:
DISPLAY=:0
Try to install xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.20.9-0ubuntu2+andrik2_amd64.deb and
fglrx_9.000-0ubuntu3+andrik1_amd64.deb from my PPA in order to exclude some
issues:
