That Optiplex is actually my work machine. However, I have also
observed this on my laptop, a Dell Latitude E7450 with an Intel video
card that also uses the i915 driver. I re-enabled animations in compiz,
and it just crashed. I do see a crash file there, which I will attach
here.

Thanks for the heads up about updating the BIOS, next time I will
definitely do that before submitting a report to avoid wasting your
time.
However, the problem still occurs (after re-enabling animations in
compiz). Here is the output of the desired command:

My system with the same problem has "CN700/P4M800 Pro/P4M800 CE/VN800
Graphics [S3 UniChrome Pro]" as the onboard display adaptor on an Asrock
775VM800 motherboard.
Worked fine in 12.04 but after upgrade to 12.10 I get a brief flash of
the splash screen followed by no video and no keyboard. Remot

Since I've updated to Natty...
I have not figured out the exact circumstances but sometimes when I wake the
screen from blanking the GPU goes into an endless reset loop. I can see the
backlight turning on and off but otherwise the screen is black. All the
