Good news. I was able to work-around this problem by disabling DRI 3:
#nano /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-amdgpu.conf
Option "DRI" "2"
I also added:
Option "TearFree" "true"
to mitigate any screen tearing, although that was for purely cosmetic
reasons.
See if this works for you and report back,
It's also worth mentioning that using "EnablePageFlip" "off" causes serious
screen tearing when interacting with the desktop... Switching KWin's
compositing engine to xrender helps the tearing somewhat, but still - this is
terrible.

I can confirm this bug, and that changing the video output to "OpenGL

Switched to Nouveau recently due to issues with NVIDIA proprietary

I contacted Dell support about the issue, and in addition to being
requested to upgrade the BIOS, I was also pointed to this new driver
package:

I have not yet tried is, as it might only work for 12.04 Dell branded

As this is seen both with Nvidia driver and nouveau driver, I guess this
is not related to these drivers, but an issue in Xorg, or some
communication between BIOS and kernel/Xorg to wake up the screen again.
This issue is reproducible by running "xset dpms force off; sleep 5;

Ok, I also have A09 released 2014-06-26. The other thing I did was to
install the latest Nvidia drivers in Windows, but I did not think this
updates any firmware in the graphics card?
After that, I have almost not seen this issue anymore, but maybe once.

I tested this patch and it seems to have fixed the problem for me.
I have Linux machine running Ubuntu Trusty with the latest nVidia
drivers (337.25-0ubuntu1~xedgers14.04.2). I used XFCE as my window
manager for a mythtv/xbmc setup.

If I start in rescue mode, and then pick (I believe it was) failsafe
graphics, it does work and comes up at a low resolution.
