After re-reading the 64-bit stuff I downloaded the b4-bit Karmic live
CD.
Running the Live CD "as is" the only displays available were 640x480 and
800x600 on restart entering the boot command "nomodeset" the following
display resolutions were also available: 1360x768, 1152x864 (default),
and 1024x

I apologise for the inclusion of logs and stuff in the post. I did try
and change it after I posted it, but the page just timed out on me every
time.
However attached are the logs you asked for. Behaviour wise with that
boot command included the login screen was not "bunched up" at the
bottom. All
