Kernel 3.11.0-1.4 (based on the upstream 3.11-rc4 kernel) is now
available in Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander. Also, kernel 3.11.0-2.5 is
in Saucy-proposed, which is based on the upstream 3.11-rc5 kernel, which
has some bugfixes for the new DPM method.

I neglected to mention that to use the new power management feature on R700 and
newer hardware (other than APUs) requires installation of the latest AMD
graphics microcode (ucode) files to /lib/firmware/radeon
These are available at http://people.freedesktop.org/~agd5f/radeon_ucode/

Better power management for AMD/ATI Radeon R600 and newer hardware is
finally available in the upstream 3.11 linux kernel. The first release
candidate (3.11-rc1) of the 3.11 kernel is available at

to install and uninstall it
There seems to be some hope on the horizon. While discussing AMD's
recent UVD code drop (for finally supporting video decoding on the GPU
instead of the CPU), AMD's John Bridgman said We actually expected the
next round of power management IP to get approved for release before
UVD, but it didn't
Alright I sent him an e-mail. Is there anything else I can do to help
resolve this bug? Anyone else I can provide information to?

Your most recent comment describes a well known disparity between power
management in the open-source Radeon driver and power management in the
closed-source Catalyst (fglrx) driver. There is probably not much you
can do, although you could try emailing AMD's Alex Deucher and asking
him if he
low seems to help but the fan still runs constantly (although not at a
high rate). Even at this setting it doesn't come close to what the
official ATI driver offered. Any other suggestions or workarounds?
Anything I can help test?

Note that setting profile power management on it's own might not do
much. After setting profile, then set default, low, mid,
high or auto as described at http://www.x.org/wiki/radeonBuildHowTo

Bryce, I understand that it is probably standard procedure to mark
something like this as Wishlist but it is honestly bad enough that I
cannot run my machine with it. This means that I am effectively stuck at
12.04 or earlier (as ATI no longer supports my card on the new version
of Xorg).

Open source radeon driver causes laptop to heat up / run fan
See http://www.x.org/wiki/radeonBuildHowTo#radeon-KMS_power-management
for details on how to enable and use power-management on the open-source
radeon driver. This can reduce heat output and extend battery life.
