This is still an issue. I tried (kubuntu) natty-desktop-amd64+mac.iso from
2011-01-03 on a 27 inch iMac with Radeon 4850 (iMac11,1). Unfortunately, i have
no external LCD, so i can't help you with the output of /sys/class/drm/card0.
However, i did boot the livecd with vesa graphics, and this is
I can confirm this issue.
Tried with Natty daily build. Black screen after choosing to try Ubuntu.
Installation with the alternate CD works, but still a black screen after
booting the first time.
I've tried with the following CD's:
-Kubuntu Natty Daily Desktop AMD64
-Kubuntu Natty Daily Desktop
@artik -- if you are able to use the second screen on the live CD it
would be good to get the dmesg output and the contents of all of the
files in /sys/class/drm/card0, we may be able to work out why it thinks
there is no output for the LVDS.

Hi Andy, Hi Jisaac. A pretty strange thing is the most bugs are

I could not use Unity although the ATI Drivers were installed. I had to

very buggy so I'm now using Maverick.
I'm having a lot of problems to make my iMac working smoothly with

Still happening with 11.04 Alpha 1 (blank screen). I had to install it with the
Alternate CD.
Let me know if you need more information.

Could those of you with this issue please test with the latest Natty

Also noticed similiar problem on Foxconn Nettop D510 - system has a
phantom screen, i.e. look at monitor settings and it shows the real
monitor as Monitor 2 and Monitor 1 (aka the primary) is
nonexistent but appears.
On boot up the screen is blank as it is driving the phantom monitor.

Ah, hold on -- I see what the 'fix' was. The black-screen bug was put into

it documented for Maverick. This is consistent with Andy's comments.
This bug will need to be moved to Natty Narwhal (11.04). If a

Thanks Martin for report It seems final release will have this bug.
Someone @ ubuntu team or kernel dev can buy an Imac ? lol
Also, to trying solve this so important bug, I'm looking to change the graphic
card with a nvidia one. But it seems it's not compatible with Imac27.
Let's wait,
Issue is definetly in the kernel. I'm so surprised that after all
comments (and it's a regression) this bug is not fixed.

Benno - It's probably worth asking or searching the question in that

As to the specific postings where this was discussed
I think the most annoying thing about ubuntu or any version there of is
the lack of people able to write a step by step process of what they

worked, what didn't

* select the recovery mode and added radeon.modeset=0 nomodeset to the boot
options (the line with linux ...)
