Agreed, if the OP is intending to build a headless server then that
would be the choice I'd make too.

If I was setting up a dedicated music server
what desktop environment are you using? If it's Gnome or KDE you might
do well considering a lighter footprint such as Xfce. It might be
simplest to install Xubuntu which is basically Ubuntu with a Xfce
desktop environment.

Actually, htop is a newer replacement for top that is a little nicer to
use.
htop/top will tell you how much swap is being used. Also, sort on the
amount of memory used to see who the hogs are.

Yes, EasyTAG can't see or set the compilation tag for example. And as a
newbie to the SB who has been trying to clean up his music database,
I've discovered that this tag
Ok, solved it myself. Apparently the database server had failed to start
due to a line in its configuration file. Commenting out the line
resolved the problem:
/etc/mysql/my.cnf:

Hi,
suddenly my slimserver doesn't start anymore on booting up my nslu. I
cannot remember that I've changed anything, and it always used to work.
I tried to start the server manually using the following command:
sudo -u slimserv /usr/local/slimserver/slimserver.pl --cachedir
/var/cache/slimserve

You could say that, and it would be entirely rational.
However, this is nothing to do with rationality: we're talking visceral
feelings here!
FWIW I'd probably feel bad about running

I've now got SC7.0 running under a minimal Debian install. It appears to
be working correctly, but rather slowly. The test machine is a 500MHz
AMD K6-2 with 448MB RAM, and the test music library comprises just 4
albums of FLAC files. In comparison, I also have SC7.0 running under
Windows 2000 on a

I know how he feels as well - but it *is* a cop-out.
Yuk, you won't see me touching no dirty stinking windows software ...
;)
