I should add that once Debian is installed I can not connect via SSH. I have checked on the server and no ports are open. I am not sure if this is failed install or SSH is not running. Either way I can not check as the only way I know the server is up is by pinging it. If you install SSH as we

You are quite right, the 715N is the entry level Dell was (or at least was). I will persist, as I know it can be done - well it would appear some people have doen it according to the Dell forums. I have found a blog that explains the process, up until I fail with no info beyond this. I have con

Off the top of my head...maybe you could put the drive in another linux box and run it in a chroot-ed environment? I haven't done it with a hard drive, but I have done it with a cd image. Perhaps someone else with a bit more experience can chime in... Cody -- reverber -

Sounds like a fair idea! I think we've got one of those USB hard drive caddies at work - I'll have to look at borrowing it. I'll have a go at it this evening, I gave in to the pleasures of wine, food and excellent music last night. -- steve4586

Yes, you can install the SSH Client as part of the expert install. I am not sure if I will be able to installed the SSH server, as at the installation stage apt-get won't be available. However, the expert installer has got the ASH shell available, so am hoping to use this to hack the install pro

I think I have cracked the SSH problem. Debian installs as a two stage process. Stage 1 to get a base system, stage 2 to install apps and everything else after rebooting after stage 1. What I failed to spot is that you can run stage two in stage one by selecting "baseconfig-udeb: run base-conf
