there is any scaling or "fit to page" in effect that might be a problem.

I may not have your discerning eye, but using LO v7.0.3.1 on a Fedora
v33 box, when I check the automatically converted superscript with one

changing it to a superscript they look identical for me. I checked two

I have tried saving font changes (to Arial Black from Times New Roman) many
times in Calc. I need this due to problems with poor vision. Each time I
reload the document I have to do it again (block, change, and re-save). It
is a three-page spreadsheet. Am I doing something wrong?
