I would suggest use Citrix Xen Server along with Citrix Xen Center instead of
vmware. (Its free.) Yes it is good idea to use virutalization. Your existing
hardware is good enough to handle your suggested traffic.

well I already had printed the user guide and used it to setup Kannel.
my config right now is as simple as it comes - I set the modems group to auto
and did an include etc/kannel/modems.conf (yes, I moved the modems.conf file
over!) bearerbox recognizes the modem as a wavecom loads the drivers.

Kannel works with GSM modems not CDMA, however you can patch kannel and do a
driver with specific CDMA commads. take a look at smsc_at.c it is the GSM
modem driver

There seems to be a known bug somewhere in the queue management. Under
some circumstances, messages start getting queued in kannel queue and are
not released until kannel is restarted. Restarting only an smsc does not
freeup those messages.

There is no harm to use only one server for both work but LAMP on High Load can
take all the hardware capacity/resource which is also being used by Kannel so
you might get low throughput on that period.
