Yes, I think you misread kernal as Kannel. The device uses USB, and needs
drivers but in order to install the USB drivers the Linux kernal would need to
be recompiled.

The 10k messages a day doesn't say very much about the load. In average it
means one message in every 8.6 sec (what is "nothing"). But the max load is
important. May be it hangs when max load is reached..? Analyze your traffic
to disclose the load peaks, may be you will find coincidence.
